Ukraine's place on the EU gas map

08/11/23

The transformation of the global gas market poses a serious challenge but also represents a unique opportunity for Ukraine to become a reliable partner and a strong player in the EU. This was emphasized by the Executive Director of the Association, Artem Petrenko, during the VIII Business & Legal Energy Forum.

  • Europe continues to diversify supplies, actively moving away from resources from Russia. Since the beginning of the war, the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory has been record low and continues to decrease. In the first ten months of this year, it amounted to 12.1 bcm, 32% less than last year and 66% less than the volumes in 2021. It is most likely that in 2025, there will be no transit after all. Therefore, optimizing the Ukrainian GTS to reflect current realities is critically essential.

  • Ukraine has the most extensive UGS in Europe, with a capacity of over 30 bcm, which are now actively used by foreign companies injecting gas for storage.

  • The available resource potential onshore and the maritime shelf, along with the successful implementation of oil and gas projects, could make our country a gas exporter to the EU. However, the security situation is vital in this context: making a significant leap during the war is practically impossible. At the same time, it will become the main task in the post-war period.
