Ukraine can refuse the gas import and achieve energy independence – Petrenko

19/02/21

The Executive Director of the Association Artem Petrenko took part in the All-Ukrainian Forum “Ukraine 30”, which was dedicated to the issue of tariffs and energy independence of Ukraine and was held in the capital on February 15-18, 2021.

"Producing more of our own gas and giving up imported gas is not a dream, but a real opportunity and Ukraine has enough resources to achieve this objective. This is not only an issue of Ukraine's energy security, but also the improvement of the economic situation by creating new jobs and increasing state and local budget incomes "Artem Petrenko said.

He highlighted that oil and gas business is very risky and capital-intensive, as it requires constant investment in geological exploration, drilling, workovers, purchase of related equipment. The COVID-19 pandemic and hydrocarbons price collapse have forced gas producers to pause investment in the sector and freeze many new projects.

"Undoubtedly, in such a difficult time, the state must support the industry and motivate investors to continue investing. The key for gas producers is the stability of tax policy, the invariability of the rules of the game, the improvement of the regulatory environment and the prevention of additional fiscal burden on the industry. I am convinced that the joint actions of the government and industry will contribute to the development of the sector and increase Ukrainian gas production", said the Executive Director of the AGPU.
